Tribulations And Triumph

This is just a reboot series for Call of the Nomad among my other works that I may update from time to time. (And Buck, Legend Of The Lost Kool-Aid flavor will still be continued after the Missing Constellation. Relax)

Prologue - Band of Brothers

The forest of Sylph whistles among its leaves the song of the wind, and clouds pass by in the slowly darkening sky. This was the world in its most peaceful state. In reality life itself was far from it; I live in a world full sorcery, war, science, demons, blood, and dragons. The word "law" here is nothing more than a joke, a mythical and absurd concept. It was a rare case for anyone born to reach adulthood without having their throats slit or to become horribly mutilated, because society had chosen power and bloodthirst over harmony and altruism. The only way anyone could ever hope to survive in this world is to quickly learn to fight, and sleep with one eye open. Fortunately for myself I have found allies in this everlasting rat race, and we've been looking out for each other ever since we met.

Hailing from the Badlands are the brothers Aizen and Flash. They come from a province known for its advancements in technology, and they contribute much of those proficiencies in our group. Aizen, sometimes referred to as "The Genius Boy" is the youngest of our group and a prodigy when it comes to mechanical contraptions. He may not possess any remarkable physical prowess or magical knowledge, but his versatile arsenal of machinery have proven more than useful in the field of combat. His older brother is Flash, also known as "The Wingman" is a skilled aviator and marksman, and he possesses the invaluable trait to scout for impending danger. Then we have Evan, a member of the Revanchist clan. He is able to effectively wield any weapon he finds with ease He does possess some skill in the magical arts, however not that much. Finally there's me. I am Vergil of the Thaumanaut tribe, a mysterious race that is virtually extinct. My preferred weapon of choice are bladed weapons, and I carry with me a dreamcatcher of unrealized power.

The story unfolds as I step forth near a high a hill in the Slyph forest, approaching my allies. "It's getting dark, we should be heading back now," I announce to them. Aizen looks up at me and responds, "Aye yo, Flash isn't back from his scouting trip yet. We can't go back without him." Evan smirks as he tosses a branch into a small campfire. "You know what you should do, Vergil?" He asks. "You should shut the fuck up and enjoy the fact that we aren't attacked right now. 'Kay?" I shoot him a scornful look for a moment and revert back to not giving a fuck. I sit down and hold out a dead rabbit I had caught while hunting and place it in a pot for cooking. "A rabbit?" Evan sarcastically remarks. "Is this all the mighty Thamanaut could find with his magical voodoo powers?" "Gettin' reaaaaaaaaaaaaal tired of your shit, Evan," I sneer back. "I refrained from using any of the dreamcatcher's abilities in case any potential enemy was nearby. Magic isn't exactly subtle, you know. Anyway, there should be more for you two since I'm not hungry." Before we could continue with our usual banter we see Flash running in. "Uhh... you guys," Flash chimes in. "We got trouble. Out in the west. Bandits. Lots of them and they don't look friendly. They kinda saw me and... uh... they're headed this way... uh... are we gonna fight this or..."

I stand up and face my cohorts and declare my plan. "Alright guys, here's how it's gonna go down. We're going to use our standard formation. Aizen, you go ahead, go north and set up your machines. Flash, find higher ground and see if you can take any of them out from long range. Evan, remain hidden in the woods. Your hunter instincts should be able to ambush any of them if they get careless. I'll head down the center line and face off with their leader. Everyone call for assistance if needed, but we should be able to get the upper hand in this skirmish. Everyone understood?" They all rise and nod. "Good. Let's move out!"
